Food chain and Food web

Definition of Food Chain

A food chain is a sequence of organisms in which each organism obtains food from the previous one and becomes a source of food for the next.
It shows one-way transfer of energy from producers → consumers → decomposers.

Example: Grass → Deer → Tiger

Definition of Food Web

A food web is a network of interconnected food chains in an ecosystem, where different organisms obtain food from more than one source.
It represents feeding relationships among various organisms and shows how they are interlinked.

Example: Grass is eaten by deer, rabbit and insects; these are eaten by different carnivores.

Definition of Ecological Pyramid

An ecological pyramid is a graphical representation that shows the number, biomass, or energy of organisms at different trophic levels in a food chain or food web.
It is pyramid-shaped because energy decreases at each successive trophic level.

Types:

  • Pyramid of number
  • Pyramid of biomass
  • Pyramid of energy
